East Japan Heavy Ion Center, Faculty of Medicine, Yamagata University is the world's first treatment facility connected to a general hospital. Patients with comorbidities can also receive treatment.

The "Rotating Gantry Irradiation Room" and the "Fixed Irradiation Room" are equipped with the world's third rotating gantry using superconducting technology, which enables irradiation from various angles. Both rooms employ the 3D pencil beam scanning method, the fifth of its kind in Japan, to deliver a beam that traces the target tumor in accordance with its shape.

The waiting and irradiation areas, where patients stay, are decorated in light, vivid colors. The center is connected to the general hospital via a corridor and has eight individual waiting rooms to protect patients' privacy. The accelerator, which is usually out of patients' sight, has been painted green with nature-rich image of Yamagata. This machine creates the heavy ion beam that irradiates malignant lesions and is located in the equipment area centered on a synchrotron.
