Support Fund of Yamagata University Faculty of Medicine
-Toward the "Research and Development Project for the Next-Generation Carbon Ion Irradiation System for Medical Use-
Dear Sir or Madam,
We would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for your continued support and cooperation in the management of Yamagata University Faculty of Medicine.
Since the Faculty of Medicine decided at a faculty meeting in 2004 to make "cancer" the center of medical care at Yamagata University Faculty of Medicine, we have been working hard toward the establishment and operation of the Tohoku Cancer Network and the construction of a carbon ion radiotherapy facility. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the local governments, corporations, and individuals who have donated a total of over 2.3 billion yen in order to advance this project. Thanks to your support, we have steadily accumulated the number of treated patients since we started carbon ion radiotherapy for prostate cancer in February 2021, and in FY2023, we were able to complete treatment for 662 patients, exceeding our annual target of 600.
Currently, the Center has begun joint research on a patient positioning system using a CT system installed in the treatment room in order to achieve more accurate carbon ion irradiation to the target volume. Ultimately, we are aiming for "3D image-guided adaptive particle therapy" that can respond to any change in the position or shape of the cancer without waiting. As a research and development facility, we will continue to contribute to the improvement and development of the welfare of the local community with the mission of advancing cancer treatment, international development, and human resource exchange and training. Funds are necessary for the operation of the Center and for research, education, and medical treatment related to carbon ion radiotherapy. We would appreciate your further understanding and endorsement of the purpose of this fund and would appreciate your exceptional support.
